What the service includes

Initial appointment booking

Marie Stopes International has a 24 hour information and appointment booking service on 0845 300 80 90 offering knowledgeable and supportive advice for doctors and clients. There is no wait for appointments at our centres.

Initial consultation

All clients will see a doctor or specialist nurse for a medical consultation, which includes:

• a full medical history being taken
• screening for chlamydia
• ultrasound to assess gestation
• determination of the grounds for termination of pregnancy (in accordance with the
• 1967 Abortion Act)
• a discussion of procedure options

Clients will also be given booklets clearly explaining the procedure.

Consultations are held at our main centres or at our local pregnancy advice centres.

Counselling

Every client is offered the opportunity of talking to a specialist counsellor if she is unsure of her feelings and wishes to discuss her situation further (we do not insist on counseling at MSI if a woman is happy with her decision.)

Procedures available

In compliance with the 1967 Abortion Act, termination of pregnancy is provided until the 24th week of pregnancy. The types of procedures available at MSI include:

• Early medical termination of pregnancy up to nine weeks
• Surgical treatment - non-general up to
  12 weeks
• Surgical treatment with general anaesthetic or conscious sedation up to 19 weeks
• Surgical treatment with general anaesthetic 19 to 24 weeks

Aftercare

All clients receive comprehensive written aftercare information and can call our 24-hour advice line – 0845 122 1441 any aftercare treatment required is included in the fee, including a check-up if required. Post-abortion counselling is available to all MSI clients.
