Marie Stopes International statement on the Pope’s comments on condom use

London, 25 November 2010:  The Pope has announced that condoms can be used “in certain cases” to protect from the spread of the HIV virus.

Marie Stopes International welcomes all moves to expand access to contraception.

“The Pope’s support for using condoms to prevent sexually transmitted infections is important,” said Dana Hovig, CEO of Marie Stopes International. “However, his statement does little to help the 215 million women worldwide who want access to modern contraception for family planning and do not have it. Millions of these women will suffer death or disability as a result of pregnancy-related causes each year. We hope the Catholic Church will expand the dialogue on contraception to address their needs too.”
