London, 13 January 2011: Legal action has begun today to secure an updated interpretation of the 1967 Abortion Act that would allow the home-administration of medication prescribed for early medical termination of pregnancy. Marie Stopes International supports all efforts to increase choice to women, especially with respect to their sexual and reproductive health.
Tracey McNeill, Marie Stopes International Vice President & Director of UK and West Europe said: “As an international organisation we have experience of providing women with the option to take the second pill at home; in addition we know that enabling women to take control of the timing and environment in which they complete the termination makes a real difference to them.
We would like to see this choice extended to the women of Great Britain.“We look forward to continuing our partnerships with all sexual health organisations, and the Department of Health, to improve options for
women that choose not to continue with their pregnancy.”
