Female sterilisation services
Female sterilisation is the most popular form of contraception in the world.
It is a safe and effective method of contraception for women who have completed their families or for those who do not wish to have children. At Marie Stopes International we have carried out thousands of female sterilisation procedures , making us one of the most experienced organisations in the field.
We offer a comprehensive confidential service which includes:
- initial consultation
- all aftercare
Sterilisation works by sealing the fallopian tubes that carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. This prevents the egg and sperm meeting, so pregnancy can't occur. The eggs are just reabsorbed by the body. The procedure itself is very straightforward and is preformed by highly trained gynaecologists. It is carried out under general anaesthetic and clips are used to seal the fallopian tubes. It only takes 15-20 minutes to complete and you do not need to stay with us overnight.
It is a permanent method, so you should only consider it if you either do not want children or have all the children they want. If you have any doubts, you should choose a different method. Female sterilisation offers no protection against sexually transmitted infections/HIV/AIDS.
Female sterilisation is over 99% effective. Only about 1 in 200 women will still become pregnant after having a sterilisation.
No wait for an appointment
Usually we can offer an appointment within two weeks. We provide our female sterilisation service at our Essex Centre in Buckhurst Hill; please click on the centres button on the top navigation bar for more details.
At Marie Stopes International, age is not a barrier to having this procedure, although we do advise that anyone under the age of 25 has counselling before proceeding.
