Funded abortion care

The UK Government have committed to cover the cost of abortion care for women from Northern Ireland who are treated in England.

As part of your treatment, the following expenses will be met:

  • your travel arrangements and expenses;
  • your overnight accommodation;
  • your transportation expenses (eg taxi).

Liverpool clinic - Medical abortion

The Marie Stopes UK Liverpool clinic is dedicated to offering medical abortion care to Northern Irish clients. A medical abortion uses medication to end a pregnancy. The treatment involves taking two types of medicine at two different times. It is the safest treatment option up to 9 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy for most people.

Manchester clinic - Surgical abortion

The Marie Stopes UK Manchester centre provides surgical abortion every other day of the week.

We offer surgical abortions up to 23 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy. The type of surgical abortion procedure we offer you will depend on how many weeks you have been pregnant and your medical history.

Abortion aftercare

Our care doesn’t end once you leave the clinic to travel home.

Our nurse-led aftercare line is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

You can speak to our nurses at any time on 0345 122 1441. Feel free to ask them any questions that are on your mind about your recovery or pregnancy tests following your abortion. We are here to support you.

Counselling and contraception

We provide counselling services for anyone who would like to talk through their abortion options before booking their consultation appointment. Post-treatment counselling is also available any time if you need to talk.

You can also speak to one of our confidential specialist counsellors after you have gone back home to Ireland. We have counselling appointments available over the phone at a time that suits you. There is no time limit to you requesting a counselling appointment after your abortion, so if you decide you would like to talk to someone at a later date we can arrange this for you.

As part of your abortion care, we'll offer a wide range of short and long-term contraceptive options.

We are proud to be rated GOOD in all our centres

Our clients’ care is at the centre of everything that we do and we work closely with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and Department of Health to make sure we are delivering the highest quality service.

To receive funded abortion care you will need to:

  1. Live in Northern Ireland (have a BT postcode); and
  2. Provide a Health and Care Number (HCN).

If you’re not sure of your HCN number, your GP surgery will be able to let you know what it is. You do not need to tell your GP why you need to know the number unless you want to.
