I’ve had an abortion and need some aftercare advice

Recovery after an abortion will be different for everyone, but you’ll usually feel better within a few days. It’s good to know what’s normal after an abortion, so you know what to expect and what to look out for.

Read our abortion aftercare page here for advice.

However, if you feel like you’re experiencing any problems – either physical or emotional – that you’d like more support with, we’re here to help.

You can call our aftercare line on 0345 122 1441 and talk to one of our friendly, experienced nurses. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

I am bleeding after my medical abortion and need some advice

It is perfectly normal to bleed after you have had a medical abortion. Every person is different, and will experience different amounts of bleeding throughout the abortion process.

You may experience heavy bleeding for a few hours, and during this time it would be expected for you to pass the pregnancy tissue and blood clots that range in size from small (the size of a pound coin) to quite large (the size of a lemon). Many of our clients find it easier to have a private toilet nearby; often the pregnancy is passed in the toilet between 4 – 5 hours after taking the second set of medication.

Once the pregnancy has been passed, your bleeding will usually lessen and become more like a heavy period. It may continue to be quite heavy for a day or two as the uterus needs to contract and return to its normal size.

It’s very important to use sanitary pads and not tampons to avoid infection, and to keep track of your bleeding. It is normal to have some bleeding or spotting for up to 4 weeks after your medical abortion. This bleeding may be unpredictable, irregular or prolonged. Please do not take aspirin during this time as it can increase your bleeding.

If you ever feel worried, you can reach us on our dedicated aftercare line: 0345 122 1441 – open 24 hours a day.

I am bleeding after my surgical abortion and need some advice

It’s perfectly normal to experience some bleeding after having a surgical abortion. This can start immediately or up to 72 hours after your procedure, and can last up to 1-2 weeks.

Bleeding can be heavier than a normal period, with small clots, but it is not a period. Please do not take aspirin during this time as it can increase your bleeding. If you bleed heavily during or immediately following your treatment, we are often able to manage this on site, but may transfer you to a hospital.

Some women can haemorrhage – this is uncommon and affects around 1-2 in 1000 women – but it can happen during the procedure, immediately afterwards, or up to 10 days after you’ve returned home. It can be associated with having had previous pregnancies, previous C-sections, and increased age.

If you find that you’re experiencing very heavy bleeding that soaks through more than 2 sanitary pads (suitable for a heavy flow) an hour, please call us straight away. You can reach us on our dedicated aftercare line: 0345 122 1441 – open 24 hours a day.

I am in pain after my medical abortion and need some advice

It’s perfectly normal to experience some pain following a medical abortion. It’s likely you’ll experience strong cramping – usually stronger than a heavy period – immediately after, and this can last a few hours. Cramps will then usually lessen over the course of 1-2 days after taking the second set of tablets, but occasionally this can take up to 2 weeks.

Every person is different, and will experience different levels of pain. We recommend the following tips for helping cope with any pain:

  • Paracetamol, codeine, and ibuprofen are all painkillers that will not interfere with the abortion medication. We will give you advice on when to take these tablets. Please do not take aspirin as it can increase bleeding.
  • Apply a heat pad or (warm) hot water bottle wrapped in a towel or blanket to your lower abdomen.
  • Wear comfy, loose clothes, make yourself comfortable and try to relax at home. We recommend you delay returning to work until 1-2 days after your treatment.

If you have abdominal pain or discomfort that is not helped by pain relief medication, or by heat pad, you can call our aftercare line on 0345 122 1441 any time, day or night, to speak to a nurse.

I am in pain after my surgical abortion and need some advice

It’s perfectly normal to experience constant or intermittent cramps following a surgical abortion. It’s not unusual to continue to get cramping on and off in the first 2 weeks after treatment.

I don’t agree with the anti-choice groups standing outside some of your clinics, how can I help?

Across our network of clinics we see the distressing impact anti-choice groups have on those entering our building. Their activities cause many to feel harassed, intimidated, scared, alarmed, and angry. We want to see this barrier to accessing care removed, and are working with partners and pro-choice networks across the country with the aim of protecting people from this street harassment. Here are some ways you can get involved:

  • If you have witnessed harassment, or have been harassed yourself, please call 101 and report it to the police.
  • If you witness or experience harassing behaviour outside a clinic, you can submit your anonymous testimony with the national Back Off campaign website.
  • Join a local grassroots pro-choice group, such as Sister Supporter in London and Manchester. They work in the community, gathering evidence of how this activity affects local residents and bring this to the attention of the local council.
  • Email your local ward councillor and / or council community safety department and ask them to support local resident’s rights to access healthcare free from intimidation, interference, and harassment. Find your local councillor and how to contact them here.
  • Email your local MP and ask them to support everyone’s right to access healthcare free from intimidation, interference, and harassment. You can find your MP and how to contact them here.
