What is an abortion or “termination of pregnancy”?

An abortion is the deliberate medical process of ending a pregnancy. An abortion is also known as a ‘termination’ or ‘termination of pregnancy‘. At MSI Reproductive Choices UK we offer two types of abortion care: medical abortion (abortion pills) and surgical abortion.

Are abortions safe?

Abortion is very safe, when performed in a Department of Health and Care Quality Commission registered clinic, with specialists performing approved treatment, like at MSI Reproductive Choices.

If you’d like to talk through your options, call us on 0345 300 8090 for a confidential chat.

Which abortion is right for me?

The type of procedure you can be offered will depend on a few personal factors. Your gestation (how many weeks pregnant you are), past medical history, gynaecological history, medications and personal choice will all help determine which method is best for you.

Watch this video of Dr Yvonne Neubauer, MSI Reproductive Choices UK’s Associate Clinical Director, explaining the difference between Medical and Surgical abortion.

How to get an abortion appointment in London?

We have clinics across London, which you should be able to get to without using public transport.

If you have had an unexpected positive pregnancy test and have mixed feelings about what to do, you are not alone.

MSI Reproductive Choices is one of the leading abortion care services in the UK.

What is the “At home abortion pills” service?

Dr Yvonne Neubauer is MSI Reproductive Choices UK’s Associate Clinical Director: she is passionate about delivering safe abortion care to all pregnant people considering this option.

In this video she explains how the “At home abortion pills” service works: if you are eligible for this type of abortion, you would be able to receive your pills by post.

Our network of over 60 clinics is also still open for anyone who is not eligible for this option and needs, or prefers, to attend a clinic to receive face-to-face care.

How to have an abortion at home in London?

We have an “At home abortion pills” service: if you meet safety criteria to allow for medical abortion without a scan, the abortion medications can either be collected by you from a centre or posted to your home address after your phone consultation.

You can always call our FREE advice line on 0345 300 8090: our experienced and trained agents will explain the next steps, book you in for a phone consultation and will offer the option of FREE counselling appointments.

Before your abortion, you will have a consultation with one of our specially-trained nurses or midwives.

We will calculate your gestation (how many weeks pregnant you are) and take a full medical history from you. We may also carry out some tests to ensure your safety.

Following your consultation, you will have the choice of either collecting the pills from your preferred clinic or having them posted to you.

Following your consultation, you will have the choice of either collecting the pills from your preferred clinic or having them posted to you. Your Medical Abortion Pack will contain:

– Both sets of abortion pills
– One box containing codeine tablets (unless opted out/medically unsuitable after consultation)
– One pregnancy test (this is not a normal pregnancy test and is only designed to check whether the abortion has been successful – please keep this safe as you will need to use this three weeks after taking your tablets)
– An STI (Sexually transmitted Infection) screening kit
– Contraceptive pills (if requested)

If you have decided that abortion is the best option for you, we recommend calling us as soon as you can so we can arrange an appointment.
It’s important to know that waiting times do not change whether you have a NHS-funded treatment or a private one.

A medical abortion is a very safe procedure. After a medical abortion it is completely normal to experience cramping and bleeding.

Side effects of the medication taken during a medical abortion may include:
– Nausea or vomiting
– Headaches
– Diarrhoea
– Fever/chills, temporary flushes, or sweats

Any side effects may begin fairly soon after taking the medication, but usually settle once the pregnancy is passed.
