How do I use my vasectomy testing kit?

On the day of your vasectomy, you will be given two sample kits as well as exact dates to take and send in the samples.

Postal semen testing: your sample packs

Your sample packs will include:

  • 2 condoms
  • 2 semen collecting kits, each containing a small sample pot, a transport container and a plastic envelope
  • 2 prepaid envelopes
  • 2 laboratory slips
  • 2 dressings to replace the one the doctor will have placed on your wound

When to do the test after the vasectomy

At least 16 weeks after your vasectomy procedure, you should send in a sample of semen through the post using your sample pack. All post is free and the envelope are discreet.

It is advised that in between your treatment, and sending off your first sample, you have at least 25 ejaculations, between 2-3 a week to clear the remaining sperm in your system.

At least 14 days after taking your first sample, you will need to take a second sample and post it as above. 5 days later you'll receive your results.

The sample process

  • Ejaculate into the special condom provided and empty all of your semen into the sample pot. Throw the condom away – do not include it in the sample pot or post.
  • When all the semen is in the sample pot, screw the lid on tightly and write your full details and date on the pot. You must do this for the laboratory to be able to use your sample.
  • Put the sample pot into the larger transport container to protect it in the post.
  • Fill out your details on the laboratory slip and ensure that it says your name, date of birth, centre, client number and date of ejaculation. If any details are missing the sample cannot be tested.
  • Put the laboratory slip and the transport container into the plastic envelope and seal it. Put the pack into the pre-paid padded envelope making sure it is well-sealed before posting.
