Helen is a Clinical Operations Manager who has been with Marie Stopes since 2014

She had previously worked with women escaping domestic abuse, saying: "when I was offered the opportunity to work for Marie Stopes UK I was attracted to the opportunity to help vulnerable women who require an advocate during a difficult time."

"I was then further attracted by the fact that Marie Stopes UK delivers a service to women in the UK, which then contributes to the international work that is run by Marie Stopes International. Meaning for every woman we help in the UK we are also helping a woman somewhere else in the world. There are not many jobs that can provide that, which is very rewarding."

Having previously worked with vulnerable women escaping abuse I'm very passionate about ensuring women are given the care, support and service they need.

    Craving adventure

Helen was born in Germany in a British military hospital, but predominately grew up in the South West of England in a small countryside village.

"It was idyllic, but my 17 year old self was craving adventure so a few days after my 18th birthday I set off for a world trip. After getting back I volunteered as a support worker for homeless people. I then moved to London and did an undergraduate degree in psychology, and then did my postgraduate in adult nursing. I started my nursing career in Haematology, moved onto community nursing and then Marie Stopes UK."

A career highlight for Helen was when she went to Tanzania to work on the labour ward and in the community with Maasai tribes. She says: "I saw first-hand the journey a pregnant woman in Tanzania goes through and the limited resources available. Abortion is very restricted in Tanzania so women have no choice, and sometimes resort to very unsafe abortions.

"It reinforced how important it is for the safety and welfare of women to access appropriate abortion services."

"I saw first-hand the journey a pregnant woman in Tanzania goes through and the limited resources available...it reinforced how important it is for women to be able to access appropriate abortion services."
"I very much enjoy being able to provide a service to women who are able to make a choice without being judged, and who are actively supported to make an informed decision."

    A day in the life

Describing a typical working day, Helen says:

"I start my day by waking up at 6am and checking my work phone to see if there are any urgent issues I need to be aware of. I then get ready and make my way to the clinic. Once I've arrived I make sure I walk around the clinic ensuring all is well, if not then I will start to troubleshoot. Once things have settled, I check my emails again and start replying to any that require a prompt response.

"While I'm in the clinic I'm the safeguarding and clinical lead, this involves ensuring that any safeguarding or clinical complications that arise are dealt with according to policy and protocol. My clinical team leader will assist with day to day issues, allowing me to focus on the other areas that need to be monitored such as audits, risk assessments, training, recruitment, managing the team etc. I will also attend meetings that work to improve the communication of the clinic and the centralised teams in Head Office, and meet with senior management to discuss business planning and needs.

"I very much enjoy being able to provide a service to women who are able to make a choice without being judged, and who are actively supported to make an informed decision about their contraceptive and reproductive life."
