Robyn is a registered nurse working for Marie Stopes UK

Originally from Scotland, where she gained her nursing degree, Robyn later moved to London taking up a role as a trauma theatre nurse and then going on to do gynaecology.

Robyn says that helping people is what attracted her to a career at Marie Stopes: "I’m obviously pro-choice, and I knew I wanted to be able to help women and make a difference to their lives."

I took to working at Marie Stopes like a duck to water!

    Every client is different

"I see women all the way through the abortion process."

"On some days I usually see ten women, they come in, and I go through the initial consultation. We talk about contraception, do STI swabs, go through consent forms. I then give them their first medical abortion tablet, I explain what to expect, and then I usually see the same woman again, and administer the second abortion tablet on a follow up day. If I am in one of our clinics, I may work all day in theatre, or on consultations. So it's quite varied, which I love.

"Abortion is so stigmatised, people tend to think that it’s all young girls coming for abortions. It’s not really the case. All the women I see are so different. Some have just had sex for the first time, and not realised that they have fallen pregnant, others are older professional women for whom contraception has failed, some are going through bereavement, or break-ups.

"From lawyers to doctors, everyone comes through the door - even women who’ve gone through menopause and think they don’t need contraception as they are already grandmothers.

"Abortion is so stigmatised, people tend to think that it’s all young girls coming for abortions. It’s not really the case."
"Personally, the gratitude and acknowledgment we get from clients is really fantastic and personal. I’ve been thanked, I’ve had cards..."

    A personally rewarding career

"Every day is really different and I know I'm helping women through a tough situation. I’m so proud to say I work for an abortion clinic, being able to help vulnerable women."

"Personally, the gratitude and acknowledgment we get from clients is really fantastic and personal. I’ve been thanked, I’ve had cards, and clients have mentioned my name in their feedback questionnaire, saying things like ‘thanks to Robyn for making it easier’.

Recently a client told me that 'you are totally suited to this job as you’ve made this so much easier'. If the women are scared I’ll hold their hand, I’ll say that they are going to get through this and support them as much as I can. I like supporting women travelling from Ireland, they are glad to be at the clinic, as there are such strong restrictions in Ireland.

"I also like the variety you get. There are different stages to an abortion, and you need to work in all areas, from consultation, medical abortion, theatre, recovery and the ward. When I worked for the NHS, it was very busy. Working at Marie Stopes is fast-paced but it’s not as busy as my previous job, it’s more relaxed and the hours are much better. My colleagues are also great here, people are good at their jobs and supportive.

"When people ask what I do, I love being able to say that I’m a nurse. I feel very proud, and all of my family is as well."
