Friday 7th February 2020: If you are covering today’s press release on contraceptive and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) shortages from The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, The British Menopause Society and The Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare, you may find the following statement from leading safe abortion provider Marie Stopes UK helpful.

Julia Hogan, Marie Stopes UK’s contraceptive and sexual health nurse said:

“Through our clinics, we regularly speak to women who have experienced difficulties accessing contraception. Not only have many services been shut down, but when women do manage to find a clinic many are being denied the full range of contraception, including some of the most effective long acting methods.

“Anything that limits women’s choice is enormously concerning and could lead to more unplanned pregnancies and more abortions.  It is frustrating because investment in contraceptive care is one of the most cost effective public health measures, with every £1 invested in contraception saving £11 in averted costs.

“The progress we have made over the last 10 years is under serious threat and unless action is taken it is the most vulnerable who will be worst affected. It’s vital that we give women the contraceptive services they deserve.”
