Menopause Consultation in London

Marie Stopes UK offers appointment with our specialist Doctor, with time to discuss your symptoms and treatment options. If you would like advice on managing your menopause symptoms, you can come in for a consultation in our Central London Centre.

Personalised appointments designed with you in mind.

You can book an appointment with our expert Doctor to discuss your menopause symptoms, and the best way for you to manage them. The 50 minute consultation is your chance for plenty of time to talk through your options and answer any questions you might have.

Specialised menopause tests

Whether you are having early signs of menopause or have been on hormone replacement therapy (HRT), our tests are designed to confirm that your symptoms are showing that you are experiencing menopause.

During your consultation, we may need to do some blood tests to check that your symptoms are a sign of the menopause. This may depend on your age and your medical history.

Blood will be taken to test your levels of:

  • Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) stimulates ovarian follicle growth, from which an egg is released at ovulation. Levels will increase as you become menopausal.
  • Oestradiol hormones which cause an egg to mature and be released during ovulation. Levels will decrease during menopause.
  • Thyroid Function – an underactive thyroid can cause symptoms similar to those of menopause.
  • Luteinizing hormone (LH) helps control the reproductive system by stimulating ovarian follicles to produce oestradiol, causing the release of an egg during ovulation, and stimulating progesterone to support pregnancy. Levels of this hormone will be higher during and after menopause.
  • Testosterone in women affects your libido. Levels will be much lower by the time you reach menopause.
  • Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHGB) binds sex hormones in your blood for better transportation. Levels will decrease in postmenopausal women as the ovaries produce fewer hormones.

Using the last two results we can calculate the Free Androgen Index which is the amount of actual circulating testosterone.

Understanding signs of menopause

If your blood test results show signs of fluctuation in these hormones, and you are experiencing other physical and emotional symptoms, you are likely to be menopausal. Your consultation will give you plenty of time to discuss how this will affect your daily life.

You can talk about treatment options during your consultation, or how best you can manage your symptoms by yourself.

Menopause treatment options

During your appointment you will have time to discuss the various options for managing your menopause symptoms [link to menopause treatment page].

A follow-up appointment can be made should you wish to pursue hormone replacement therapy (HRT) as a treatment option.
