Abortion Law in the Republic of Ireland

Abortion is illegal in the Republic of Ireland, except where the pregnancy presents a real and substantial risk to the mother's life. This includes the risk of suicide.

What is the law on abortion in Ireland?

The Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act 2013 (Irish: An tAcht um Chosaint na Beatha le linn Toirchis 2013; Act No.35 of 2013; previously Bill No.66 of 2013) is an Act of the Oireachtas which defines the circumstances and processes within which abortion in Ireland can be legally performed. Having passed both Houses of the Oireachtas in July 2013, it  was signed into law on 30 July by Michael D. Higgins, the President of Ireland. It started on 1 January 2014.

View our criteria in Ireland section for more details.

Can I travel outside Ireland to have an abortion?

Yes. You are not breaking the law by travelling abroad for an abortion. Every year, thousands of women who live in Ireland travel to the UK to have access to abortion services. Marie Stopes UK provides abortions for up to 24 weeks of pregnancy in our clinics and centres throughout the UK.

Can I travel to Northern Ireland to have an abortion?

You can have a medical abortion in Northern Ireland. Please note that this is subject to medical assessment and legal criteria being met under the law on abortion in Northern Ireland. Our Marie Stopes UK Belfast centre provides medical abortion treatment for up to 9 weeks. If you are over 9 weeks pregnant, you will be able to travel to England to receive a surgical abortion. If you are under 9 weeks but do not qualify for a medical abortion in our clinic in Belfast, you will be able to arrange an appointment in England for a surgical or a medical abortion.

Can I have my consultation in Dublin?

Before we can book an appointment to receive treatment, all women need to receive a consultation either face-to-face or over the phone to confirm the gestation of the pregnancy and go through your medical history. This medical assessment before your abortion can be done at specialist clinics in Ireland such as Reproductive Choices or other organisations which might be able to help.

Can I have unplanned pregnancy counselling in Ireland?

Yes. Although abortion is restricted in the republic of Ireland, it's not against the law to obtain support, advice or information about abortion from any sexual health clinic or organisation like Reproductive Choices in Dublin.

Can my doctor in Ireland give me abortion information?

Yes. Many doctors in Ireland will be able to give you all the relevant information you need. However, your GP can refuse to do so on religious/moral grounds. If this happens, they must refer you to someone who can help you.

Need to talk about your options?
