Post Abortion Support & Concerns

Marie Stopes UK has provided support for Irish women travelling to the UK to access safe abortion services for over 40 years. We understand the difficulties associated with travelling home after your treatment. If you have concerns, please know that we are just a phone call away to help.

Making sure you are aware of what to expect after your abortion

After receiving your treatment at one of our centres or clinic in England or in Belfast, our Marie Stopes UK medical practitioner or nurse who was in charge of you during treatment will go through what you should expect on your way home depending on the procedure you have received. As part of our discharge process, you will also be given a leaflet which contains useful information following your abortion as well as two pregnancy tests to take home with you.

Having concerns after your abortion? When do I need to seek professional help?

It is rare for any serious medical problems to occur after an abortion. If you are travelling back to Ireland or Northern Ireland and experience any of the symptoms below after an abortion, seek medical attention:

• prolonged and heavy bleeding

• raised temperature and feeling unwell or fainting

• a strong malodorous smelling discharge

• pain and cramping for more than 5 days

• chest, rib or shoulder-tip pain – this might be an indication of an ectopic pregnancy and needs to be explored further

If you have any of the symptoms listed above, you should go to your doctor or local hospital immediately as you could have an infection or another complication.

Don’t hesitate to call us 24 hours a day.

Our dedicated aftercare helpline is here to help you if you have any concerns after your treatment. You will be able to speak to one of our nurses who will advise you on a course of action or reassure you if everything is normal.
