Your pregnancy test after abortion

Doing a pregnancy test a few weeks after receiving treatment is your reassurance that the abortion has been successful. If you live in Ireland or Northern Ireland, you have several options.

A post-abortion home pregnancy test: your reassurance

If you came to the UK or our Belfast clinic to receive your medical abortion treatment with Marie Stopes UK, we will provide you with two pregnancy tests to take home with you as part of the discharge process. You will also be given two pregnancy test to take home with you if you have received treatment in any of our centres or clinics in England.

Whether you have recently had a medical or surgical abortion, we advise you to take the following step to ensure that your pregnancy has passed.

Do a  pregnancy test 4 weeks after your abortion. If this first test shows positive, you will need to wait a full week and then repeat the test as this might be a false positive.

Do repeat a pregnancy test at 5 or 6 weeks after your abortion. If this second test shows positive, please call us to get in touch with one of our nurses over the phone who will be able to discuss this in more depth with you.

False positive pregnancy test results after your abortion: this would be post treatment where your hormone levels would not be back to normal levels so the pregnancy test would show as still being pregnant. This is why we do not advise a pregnancy before 4 weeks as your hormone human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) levels will not have returned to normal. This can take up to 6 weeks but generally levels have decreased in around 4 weeks and the test could give you a false positive.
