Do I need to tell my GP?

If you live in Ireland or Northern Ireland, you may decide not to inform your GP or family doctor about the facts that you have received an abortion.

Can my doctor give me information about abortion?

Yes. Many doctors are willing to do so and have information which might be very helpful for you. Nevertheless, in Ireland and Northern Ireland, it is their choice whether they decide to give you information or not or direct you to another healthcare professional who would be willing to do so.

Your doctor may refuse to give you information about abortion. If this is the case, your GP can refer you to someone who will be able to help you with your query.

I don’t want to tell my GP

You may decide not to inform your GP or family doctor about the fact that you have received an abortion. In most cases, you do not need to inform your GP about your decision regarding your treatment. You do not have to declare why you require this information.

What about if I have clinical issues or have had complications after my abortion?

Because abortion is illegal in Ireland and unlawful in Northern Ireland, you may be worried about telling your doctor that you have received an abortion in the UK. We nevertheless advise that if you have had complications or believe that the abortion might be linked to health concerns, you inform your GP in Ireland or Northern Ireland.

Can I arrange an abortion with Marie Stopes UK myself?

Yes. You can self-refer by getting in contact with us or other organisations which can help. Marie Stopes UK will provide you with all the information you may need to receive safe and legal abortion treatment in Northern Ireland or in England in one of our specialised centres and clinics.

Do I have to tell my doctor I had an abortion?

No. However – as pregnancy and abortion are significant parts of a woman's medical history – it may be beneficial to tell your GP. If they respond negatively, you can change your doctor.
