When should I do a pregnancy test after abortion?

We advise that you take a pregnancy test 3 weeks after your treatment to assess whether your abortion has been successful – any test taken before this time may give you a false positive.

This is because the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (better known as hCG) may still be present in your body.

We'll advise you on how to test but be aware it's not advisable to take a digital pregnancy test after your treatment. This is because digital tests are very sensitive and may pick up even the slightest trace of hCG in your body, anything up to 8 weeks post-treatment.

Also, even if you have passed heavy clots after treatment, a negative pregnancy test is the only way of making sure that your treatment has worked and that your body has returned to normal.

Positive pregnancy tests

If the pregnancy test is positive, please call our aftercare line. Our advisors can help you to book an appointment for another ultrasound, and further treatment if needed.

Can I get pregnant straight after my abortion?

Yes. It's possible for women to become pregnant immediately following an abortion, so please ensure you do not have unprotected sex after your abortion. Find out about contraception.
