Do I need to discuss abortion with my GP?
Your doctor may be a family member’s GP, or your GP may have given you the impression he or she does not support abortion treatment and would not refer you. If you've seen your GP and he/she has refused to refer you for an abortion, you have the right to see another GP and ask for a second opinion.
It's possible for you to avoid speaking to your GP, and to refer yourself to Marie Stopes UK, family planning clinics, or young person’s clinic such as Brook. If you self-refer, it's still your decision as to whether or not your GP is notified after your abortion. If you access and pay for abortion services privately, it's also your decision as to whether or not your GP is notified.
Many clients, however, still prefer to see their GP before being referred to an abortion service via the NHS.
