Abortion help and advice

When accessing abortion care, we know how important it is to be able to find quality, impartial advice. We are here to support you, and will always offer confidential and non-judgemental support should you wish to discuss your decision and learn more about abortion.

On this page, we share how and where to find abortion help and advice.

Where to find abortion advice

The most important thing to remember when looking for abortion advice is that abortion providers like MSI UK will always offer impartial, confidential and non-judgemental support, and provide a safe space where you can ask any questions you have. You can get in touch with us whenever you want, even if you haven’t made a decision about whether to access abortion care, and are just looking for more information about your pregnancy options

You have the right to change your mind about accessing abortion services at any time – even if you have made a booking or had a consultation – and we will support you whether your decision is to continue or end a pregnancy. Abortion providers will also never proceed with treatment unless you are absolutely sure in your decision.

Our call centre agents and clinical teams are available to answer any questions you have and provide surgical and medical abortion advice, including how to access abortion care and what to expect during and after treatment.

There are a number of ways you can get in touch with us if you would like to discuss your abortion options. You can always get in touch should you have any questions about our services, would like to book an appointment or you have had treatment with us and want aftercare support.

Abortion counselling at MSI UK

At MSI Reproductive Choices, we provide free (NHS-funded), confidential counselling services as part of abortion care.

Counselling is the process of talking through your worries with a qualified professional. It is a form of talking therapy that lets you discuss your feelings in a safe and non-judgemental environment.

The counselling team at MSI UK is experienced and qualified to help you explore and manage your thoughts, feelings, and options as you make decisions about your care. Counsellors are approved by the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy. Our counselling team is available any time if you need to talk before, during and after your treatment, even if your abortion was some years ago.

Counselling is available over the phone, whether you are looking to access medical or surgical abortion care.

Our call centre agents will discuss our counselling services and can arrange an appointment for you during your first booking call or your consultation.

How to support someone considering an abortion

If someone close to you is considering an abortion, there are many ways you can show your support. You may be unsure of exactly how to help, but just being there can make a big difference. Find our top tips on how to support someone accessing abortion care below or read our dedicated page “Ways to be supportive“.

Sharing an abortion experience can be nerve-wracking. If there is someone in your life who feels comfortable enough to talk to you about their experience, allow them to share their thoughts and feelings freely.

Open and honest conversations about abortion help women and pregnant people feel informed, educated and supported when it comes to making their own choices about their own bodies. Let your friend or relative share their hopes, fears or worries with you.

Abortion is a very individual experience. Some people feel fine whereas others may feel confusion or sadness. Don’t try to tell the person who is sharing their experience what to think, do, feel or how to act. It’s hard to understand what they’re going through and what works for one person might not work for someone else.

Some people may prefer to attend appointments by themselves but offering to go with your friend or relative shows that you support their choices and lets them know that they aren’t alone, even if they decline.

Our clients can attend their appointment with one adult; however they will need to wait in the waiting area during your appointment.

Abortion is not something to be ashamed of, but it is important to respect people’s privacy and keep the information they have told you to yourself. It is up to them when, how, and if they choose to talk about their experience.

Other organisations who offer abortion and pregnancy advice

In addition to abortion providers, there are other organisations who can provide information, support and advice on abortion, including:

  • Your GP or local sexual health clinic.
  • Brook (who provide sexual health and pregnancy support and information for under-25s.
  • Abortion Talk (a charity who runs a free, confidential Talkline for people to chat freely and anonymously about their views and experiences of abortion.
