Female Condoms

Female condoms are worn inside the vagina to prevent semen getting to the womb.

These condoms, such as Femidom, are made from thin, soft plastic called polyurethane (some male condoms are made from this too).

When condoms are used correctly during vaginal sex, they help to protect against pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). When used correctly during anal and oral sex, they help to protect against STIs. Condoms are the only contraception that protect against both pregnancy and STIs.

Female condom advantages

  • A female condom can be inserted any time before sex.

Things to consider

  • When using a female condom, you need to make sure the penis is in the condom and not between the condom and vagina and that the open end of the condom stays outside the vagina.
  • Female condoms can slip out or get pushed into the vagina.
