Your wellbeing and safety
From time to time, anti-abortion campaigners will gather near our centres which can be upsetting for both women and men who have booked appointments with us. You have the right to use our services free from harassment or worry.
We take your safety and wellbeing very seriously and we'll always be there to take care of you at every step. Here’s what you need to know.
Do all Marie Stopes UK services have protests outside?
No. Our early medical abortion services are usually located in general healthcare settings like a local GP surgery, and so don’t tend to attract protests.
Our main centres usually do have campaigners outside. However, most of our centres are set back from the road meaning you can drive past them and up the drive if you arrive by car. Protestors are not allowed onto our premises, so you will not be followed.
What might happen?
Protestors may have posters or other materials designed to put women off using our services. They may also try to talk to women arriving at our centres.
Many of these are peaceful protests, but sometimes individuals can be persistent in their approaches to women.
We know that this can make some women nervous about walking past them or coming in, and the presence of protestors, although legal, can be unwelcome and upsetting.
What should I do?
- Remember - protestors cannot stop you from using our services. It is your decision to and no-one else’s. These are legal services and you are entitled to use them if you wish to.
- You do not have to stop and speak to them or take anything they may offer you such as a leaflet or other materials. Keep walking and stay calm.
- If you are at all worried about walking past the protestors, just call us on 0345 300 8090 and we’ll arrange for a member of staff to come out to you and escort you into the centre.
We are here to look after you and make sure your time with us is as stress-free as possible. Call us anytime - day or night - if you have any concerns at all on 0345 300 8090.
